Ingredients

Cookie Base
  • 1 cup unsalted butter Softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour Sifted
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Decorative Ingredients
  • Whole almonds for the fingernails
  • Red food coloring (optional) For added effect around the almond

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the unsalted butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, ensuring they are fully incorporated before adding the next. Mix in the vanilla extract.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this mixture to the butter mixture, combining until a dough forms.
Shaping
  1. Take small portions of dough and shape them into finger-like forms, about 4 inches long.
  2. Gently press an almond at one end to resemble a fingernail. If desired, use red food coloring to create a blood effect around the almond.
Baking
  1. Place the shaped cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  2. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  3. Allow the cookies to cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Store Witches' Finger Cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze completely cooled cookies wrapped tightly. Reheat in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for about 5-10 minutes to regain crispiness.
