Ingredients

For the filling
  • 6-8 pieces apples (e.g., Granny Smith, Honeycrisp) Choose a mix of tart and sweet apples for best flavor.
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Adjust to taste.
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg Adjust to taste.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter Dot the filling with small pieces.
For the crust
  • 1 package pie crusts (or homemade crusts)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice your apples into thin wedges, aiming for 1/4 inch thickness.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and flour. Toss in the apple slices and mix until evenly coated.
  4. If using store-bought crusts, unroll one crust and place it in a 9-inch pie dish. If making homemade, roll it out to fit the pie dish.
  5. Pour the spiced apple mixture into the prepared crust and dot the filling with small pieces of butter.
  6. Top with the second crust, crimping the edges to seal and making several slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
Baking
  1. Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.
  2. Reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 25-30 minutes, until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.
Serving
  1. Let the pie cool at room temperature for an hour before serving. Pair it with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
