  • 4 large large onions (sweet or yellow) Sweet onions, like Vidalias, are recommended for best flavor.
  • 1 cup beef broth (or vegetable broth for a vegetarian option)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: shredded cheese, breadcrumbs, or fresh herbs for garnish

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel and slice the onions into halves or quarters.
  3. In a skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for approximately 5-7 minutes until they get a light golden color.
  4. Pour in the beef (or vegetable) broth, season with salt and pepper, and allow the mixture to simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
  5. Transfer the sautéed onion mixture into a baking dish, cover with aluminum foil, and bake for 30 minutes.
  6. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes until the onions are fully caramelized and tender.
  7. Top with optional garnishes and serve hot.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven for optimal texture and flavor.
