Ingredients

For the meatballs
  • 1 lb ground beef Use Halal compliant beef.
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs Can substitute with crushed crackers or oats.
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 ea egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
For the sauce
  • 1/2 cup sweet and sour sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup bell pepper, chopped (optional) Enhances flavor and presentation.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onion, egg, milk, and season with salt and pepper.
  3. Using your hands, mix everything until just combined. Form the mixture into meatballs, aiming for about 1 inch in diameter.
Cooking
  1. Place the meatballs on a greased baking sheet and bake for about 20 minutes or until browned and cooked through.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the sweet and sour sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, and brown sugar until well combined.
  3. Once the meatballs are cooked, gently pour the sauce over them, adding the chopped bell peppers if using. Bake for an additional 5-10 minutes to coat the meatballs with sauce and caramelize it a bit.
  4. Remove from the oven, and your Sweet and Sour Beef Meatballs are ready to serve!

Notes

Avoid overcrowding the baking sheet to prevent steaming. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to a month. Reheat in the oven or microwave, adding a splash of sauce to revive flavors.
