Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 cups Macaroni pasta (uncooked)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Milk (whole milk preferred)
  • 2 cups Cheddar cheese (shredded, plus extra for topping)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard powder (optional) For enhanced flavor
  • 1/4 teaspoon Paprika For a smoky touch

Method

Cooking the Pasta
  1. Start by bringing a large pot of salted water to a boil and add the macaroni. Cook according to the package instructions until al dente, about 7-8 minutes. Drain and set aside.
Making the Sauce
  1. In the same pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute until bubbly and golden.
  2. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and add the shredded cheddar cheese, stirring until melted and creamy. Season with salt, pepper, mustard powder, and paprika if using.
Combining and Serving
  1. Add the cooked macaroni back into the pot and stir until well-coated in the cheese sauce. If desired, top with additional cheese before serving.
  2. Serve hot and enjoy the comforting embrace of this delectable Stovetop Mac and Cheese!

Notes

Feel free to experiment with cheese types and add-ins like cooked chicken or sautéed vegetables. To store, let cool completely before placing in an airtight container; it stays fresh for 3-5 days in the fridge. For reheating, add a splash of milk to restore creaminess.
