Method
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or lamb and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the onions are translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Toss in the diced mushrooms, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir until the mushrooms are cooked down and all ingredients are well combined, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool for a few minutes.
Assembly and Baking
- Roll out the pie crusts and cut them into circles (about 4-6 inches in diameter).
- Place a heaping spoonful of the meat and mushroom filling onto one half of each circle.
- Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape and press the edges together with a fork to seal tightly.
- Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush the mixture over the tops of the hand pies.
- Place the hand pies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 25-30 minutes or until they’re beautifully golden brown.
Serving
- Let the hand pies cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce or topping!
Notes
To ensure perfect hand pies, let the filling cool before assembling, avoid overfilling, and for substitutions, ground chicken or turkey can be used. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
