Runzas: A Comfort Food Delight

Are you ready to explore a delicious dish that brings together nostalgia, heartiness, and a touch of home? Let me introduce you to Runzas! These delightful turnovers, filled with tender beef, savory onions, and a medley of spices, are the perfect cross between a pastry and a pocketful of flavor. Originating from Nebraska, they celebrate simple ingredients and comforting flavors, making them a family favorite across the Midwest.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 2 cups shredded cabbage or mixed vegetables
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 package of refrigerated pizza dough or homemade dough
  • 1 egg beaten (for egg wash)

Method

  1. Prepare the Filling: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion until the beef is browned and the onions are translucent. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add Veggies: Stir in shredded cabbage, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook until the cabbage is tender and well mixed, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  3. Roll the Dough: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness.
  4. Cut and Fill: Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough into squares about 4x4 inches. Place a generous spoonful of the beef mixture in the center of each square.
  5. Seal the Pockets: Fold the corners of the dough over the filling, pinching to seal securely.
  6. Egg Wash: Place the Runzas seam side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the beaten egg.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
