Method
Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x9-inch baking pan with cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- In another bowl, mix melted butter, eggs, buttermilk, red food coloring, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Don’t overmix—it’s okay if there are a few lumps!
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
Baking
- Bake for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter!).
Frosting (Optional)
- While the brownies cool, beat the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla together until smooth.
Serving
- Once the brownies have cooled, spread the frosting on top, cut them into squares, and enjoy!
Notes
For serving, pair with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an elevated dessert experience. Storing tips: Keep leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the fridge for a week. To freeze, wrap each brownie individually in plastic wrap and keep in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.
