Ingredients

For the Brownies
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
For the Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk (to desired consistency)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
Mix Base Ingredients
  1. In a bowl, whisk together the melted butter and sugar until well combined. Add in the egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring, mixing until smooth.
Combine Dry Ingredients
  1. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring just until combined—don’t over mix!
Bake
  1. Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan, smoothing it out evenly. Bake in the oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean (or with a few moist crumbs attached). Allow cooling completely.
Make the Cream Cheese Frosting
  1. In a mixing bowl, beat together softened cream cheese and butter until creamy. Add the vanilla extract, followed by powdered sugar and milk as needed to reach a smooth, spreadable consistency.
Frost and Serve
  1. Once the brownies are cooled, spread the cream cheese frosting on top. Cut them into squares and serve!
