Ingredients

For the meatloaf
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup provolone cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, add a little oil and sauté the chopped onions and green bell peppers until tender, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic for the last minute of cooking, then remove from heat to cool.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, sautéed vegetables, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish or loaf pan and shape it into a loaf.
  6. Make a small indentation in the center of the loaf, fill it with half the provolone and mozzarella cheese, cover with meat mixture, then top with remaining cheese.
Baking
  1. Place the meatloaf in the oven and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C).
  2. Remove from the oven, let it rest for 10 minutes, then slice and serve.

Notes

For a healthier option, substitute lean ground turkey or chicken for the beef. Alternate cheeses like cheddar or Swiss can be used for flavor variation. Avoid overmixing the meat to keep it tender.
