Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Melt the unsalted butter in a medium saucepan over low heat, then let it cool slightly.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter and brown sugar, stirring until smooth.
  4. Add the maple syrup and vanilla extract to the mixture, mixing until well incorporated.
  5. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking until fully mixed in after each addition.
  6. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, ground cinnamon, and salt. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
  7. If using, fold in the chopped walnuts or pecans.
  8. Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan, smoothing evenly.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  2. Let the brownies cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then lift them out using the parchment paper and cool completely on a wire rack.

Notes

For a less sweet version, substitute some brown sugar with coconut sugar. Cover brownie edges with foil halfway through baking if they seem to be toughening. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in microwave for 15-20 seconds or in a 300°F oven for about 10 minutes.
