Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk For a substitute, mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar with regular milk and let it sit for 5 minutes.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients, then pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently until the mixture comes together into a dough.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute until smooth.
  5. Form the dough into a round shape and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Use a sharp knife to cut a deep 'X' into the top of the loaf.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  2. Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

Store cooled bread wrapped in plastic wrap or aluminum foil at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, freeze sliced bread in a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months.
