Ingredients
  

For the Base
  • 4 slices slices of crusty bread (preferably sourdough or country-style) The sturdier the bread, the better!
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
For the Cheese Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese (or your favorite cheese) Feel free to experiment with other cheese types.
  • 1 tablespoon prepared mustard (Dijon or yellow)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Pinch cayenne pepper (optional) For those who like it spicier.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your broiler and toast the slices of bread until golden brown and crispy.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter.
  3. Once melted, whisk in the all-purpose flour until well combined and cook for about 1-2 minutes.
  4. Gradually stir in the milk, whisking continuously until the mixture thickens, taking about 4-5 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and gradually add the grated cheddar cheese, stirring until smooth and creamy.
  6. Mix in the mustard, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne pepper, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Pour the cheese sauce generously over the toasted bread on a baking sheet and broil for 2-4 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
  8. Let cool for a minute before serving hot.

Notes

For the best experience, serve with a light green salad dressed with a tangy vinaigrette or alongside vegetable soup.
