  • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree Pureed pumpkin not pumpkin pie filling.
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups water Used to achieve the desired consistency.
Spices and Flavorings
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice Can substitute with a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, mix 1 cup of canned pumpkin puree with 1 cup of brown sugar. Stir until well combined, letting the sugar dissolve into the pumpkin.
  2. Gradually add 2 cups of water to the pumpkin and sugar mixture, stirring continuously to help achieve a syrupy consistency.
  3. Once combined, stir in the pumpkin pie spice, salt, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
  4. Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 15-20 minutes, until slightly thickened and aromatic.
  5. Remove from heat and let the sauce cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container.

Notes

Store in the fridge for up to two weeks. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave, stirring occasionally to avoid hot spots. Adjust sweetness to taste and add cayenne for a spicy kick if desired.
