Preparation
- In a medium bowl, combine the warm water and sugar, stirring gently. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Once the yeast is activated, pour it into the flour mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
- On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic. Form it into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl, covering it with a towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Shaping and Baking
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 24 inches long. Twist it into a pretzel shape and place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add the baking soda. Carefully add the pretzels to the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove and place them back on the baking sheet.
- Beat the egg and brush it over each pretzel. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt, then bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Allow the pretzels to cool slightly before serving. Dip them in your favorite dips, and enjoy the warm, scrumptious goodness!
Notes
Store cooled pretzels in an airtight container at room temperature for about 1-2 days. Freeze for up to a month, tightly wrapped. Reheat in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-10 minutes.
