Preparation
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top, and let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
- In another bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add the flour mixture to the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into eight equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope (about 24 inches long), then shape into a pretzel form by creating a U, twisting the ends, and folding them back over the center.
- In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and the baking soda to a boil. Carefully place each pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, flipping halfway through. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on the baking sheet.
- Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg, then sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12-14 minutes until golden brown.
- Let your pretzels cool on a wire rack, then serve warm.
Notes
Leftover pretzels can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and freeze. They will stay good for about a month. To reheat, simply place them in a preheated oven at 350°F (177°C) for about 5-10 minutes.
