Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 to 6 large large lemons (enough to yield about 1 cup of lemon juice) Use fresh lemons for best flavor.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Adjust the sweetness to your liking.
  • 4 cups cold water Divided into 1 cup for syrup and 3 cups for combining.
  • as needed Ice cubes For serving.
Optional Garnishes
  • as needed Fresh mint leaves For garnish.
  • as needed Fruit slices (like strawberries or limes) For garnish.

Method

Preparation
  1. Juice the lemons by cutting them in half and using a citrus juicer to extract the juice. Strain the juice through a fine sieve to remove seeds and pulp.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat 1 cup of water and the sugar over medium heat. Stir continuously until the sugar completely dissolves, then remove from heat and let it cool.
  3. In a large pitcher, combine the freshly squeezed lemon juice, sugar syrup, and the remaining 3 cups of cold water. Stir well to mix everything together.
  4. Taste your lemonade! If it’s too tart, add more sugar; if it’s too sweet, add a splash more lemon juice.
  5. Refrigerate the lemonade for at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve over ice and garnish with mint leaves or fruit slices.

Notes

Homemade lemonade is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in the refrigerator for about 5 to 7 days. Keep it in a tightly sealed pitcher to maintain flavor. Pour portions into ice cube trays for 'lemonade ice' to use later.
