Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Can experiment with whole wheat flour as a substitution.
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet) Ensure yeast is fresh.
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup melted butter For brushing tops if desired.
  • 1 cup warm milk Not hot; for activating the yeast.
  • 1 large egg Add to the dough for richness.
  • sesame seeds Optional topping before baking.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Create a well in the center, and add in the melted butter and activated yeast mixture. Then add the egg.
  3. Mix everything until a dough begins to form. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Once risen, punch the dough down and divide it into 8 equal portions. Shape each piece into a ball and flatten slightly.
  6. Place the shaped buns on a lined baking sheet, cover, and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  7. While the buns are rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. If desired, brush the tops with a little melted butter and sprinkle sesame seeds. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Let them cool on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy your homemade creation!
