Method
Make the Biscuits
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
- Cut in 1/2 cup butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in 3/4 cup milk until just combined.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, knead gently for about a minute, and then roll out to about 1-inch thickness.
- Cut out biscuits with a round cutter and place them on a baking sheet. Bake for about 10-15 minutes or until golden.
Prepare the Gravy
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook 1 pound ground chicken or beef until browned.
- Stir in 1/4 cup flour, coating the meat well and cooking for another minute.
- Gradually whisk in 2 cups of broth, stirring constantly until thickened.
- Season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Assemble and Bake
- In a casserole dish, layer half of the baked biscuits on the bottom.
- Pour half of the gravy over biscuits.
- Repeat with the remaining biscuits and gravy.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 20 minutes until bubbly and golden.
Notes
If you’re looking for even more flavor, consider adding sautéed mushrooms or spinach to your gravy. Timing is crucial; avoid overworking the dough. Ensure butter is well-chilled for flaky biscuits.
