Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 medium apples, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by peeling and dicing the apples into small chunks.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix well.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and melted butter until fully combined.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined, folding in the diced apples.
Cooking
  1. Heat the oil in a deep saucepan or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  3. Once cooked, transfer the donuts to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil and dust with powdered sugar.
Serving
  1. Allow the donuts to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm with a beverage of your choice.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, substitute buttermilk with plant-based milk mixed with vinegar. Monitor the oil temperature to ensure even cooking and avoid overcrowding the frying pan.
