Method
Preparation
- Start by peeling and dicing the apples into small chunks.
- In a medium bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix well.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and melted butter until fully combined.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined, folding in the diced apples.
Cooking
- Heat the oil in a deep saucepan or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Once cooked, transfer the donuts to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil and dust with powdered sugar.
Serving
- Allow the donuts to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm with a beverage of your choice.
Notes
For a dairy-free version, substitute buttermilk with plant-based milk mixed with vinegar. Monitor the oil temperature to ensure even cooking and avoid overcrowding the frying pan.
