Method
Preparing the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, instant yeast, and salt. Stir well to mix the dry ingredients.
- Create a well in the center of the mixture and add the yogurt and warm water. Mix with a spoon until a rough dough begins to form.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 30 minutes or until it doubles in size.
Cooking the Naan
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal portions (about 4-6). Roll each portion into a ball and then flatten it to about 1/4 inch thick.
- Heat a skillet or tawa over medium-high heat. Cook each piece of naan for about 1-2 minutes on each side or until bubbles form and it turns lightly golden.
- In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, minced garlic, and herbs. Brush this mixture onto the naan immediately after cooking for added flavor.
- Serve warm directly from the skillet.
Notes
Store naan in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For freezing, wrap each naan in foil or parchment paper, then place them in a freezer-safe bag for up to 2 months. Reheat on a skillet over low heat or in the microwave wrapped in a damp paper towel.
