Preparation
- In a large skillet, start by heating a drizzle of oil over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onions and bell peppers, and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until they become tender and fragrant.
- Push the veggies to the side and add the ground turkey (or beef) to the skillet.
- Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the meat is browned and fully cooked, breaking it apart with a spoon.
- Stir in the diced tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine all the flavors.
- Allow the mixture to simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. This cooks down the tomatoes and thickens the sauce.
- Spoon the mixture onto whole wheat buns and serve hot! Don’t forget to add your favorite toppings for an extra kick!
Notes
For a plant-based option, try using lentils or a protein substitute. Avoid overcooking the veggies for better texture. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
