Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Mixing
  1. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Beat in the eggs one at a time, fully incorporating each before adding the next. Then stir in the milk and vanilla extract.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  4. Fold in any optional chopped nuts, dried fruits, cinnamon, or nutmeg if desired.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  2. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  3. Allow cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For optimal results, use room temperature ingredients and avoid overmixing. Enhance flavors with almond extract or orange juice. Monitor bake time closely to prevent overbaking.
