German Meatballs: A Savory Delight

German Meatballs, or "Frikadellen," are a deliciously seasoned treat that brings a taste of Germany right to your kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or a mix of beef and veal
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley chopped (or 1 tsp dried)
  • 1 tsp mustard optional
  • Oil for frying

Method

  1. Mix Your Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, parsley, mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined, but avoid overworking the meat.
  2. Form the Meatballs: With clean hands, take a handful of the meat mixture and roll it into small, even-sized balls – about the size of a golf ball works perfectly.
  3. Heat the Pan: In a large skillet, heat a thin layer of oil over medium heat. Allow your oil to get nice and hot before adding the meatballs.
  4. Cook the Meatballs: Place the meatballs in the hot skillet, ensuring you don't overcrowd the pan. Fry them for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and completely cooked through.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Once cooked, remove the meatballs and let them drain on a paper towel. Serve them hot, paired with your favorite dipping sauce or gravy.
