  • 1 pound ground beef Opt for lean ground beef for a healthier option.
  • 1 cup rice (uncooked) For distinct texture, you may cook the rice separately.
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 can French onion soup (10.5 oz)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (such as Gruyère or Swiss) Feel free to experiment with other cheese varieties.
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • optional Crispy fried onions for topping Adds texture and flavor on top.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Add the sliced onions to the skillet with the beef and cook until softened and beginning to caramelize, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked rice, beef broth, French onion soup, and the beef and onion mixture. Stir well to combine.
  5. Pour the mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish and spread evenly.
  6. Sprinkle the shredded cheese generously over the top of the casserole.
Baking
  1. Cover the casserole with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  3. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Consider topping with crispy fried onions for added texture.

Notes

Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For freezing, cover tightly and it can last for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight before reheating.
