Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed Keep butter chilled for perfect texture.
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk Use chilled milk for best results.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup currants or raisins (optional) Optional for added flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well-blended.
  3. Add the chilled, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and then combine it with the milk and vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. If using currants or raisins, fold them in gently at this stage.
  6. Lightly flour your work surface and turn the dough onto it. Knead gently just enough to bring it together, being careful not to overwork the dough. Pat it into a circle about 1-inch thick.
  7. Using a floured knife or a round cutter, cut out scones from the dough. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  9. Allow cooling slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with butter, jam, or your favorite toppings!

Notes

For best results, chill all ingredients before use and avoid overmixing the dough to keep scones tender.
