Ingredients

For the dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm water
  • 1 pinch salt
For the filling
  • ½ cup caramel sauce store-bought or homemade

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a larger bowl, mix together the flour, brown sugar, melted butter, honey, cinnamon, and salt. Pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Flour your surface and knead the dough for a few minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for about 20 minutes in a warm spot.
Waffle Making
  1. Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Once the dough has risen, divide it into small balls (about the size of a golf ball). Flatten each ball slightly, then place it into the waffle iron. Cook until golden brown, usually about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Remove the waffles from the iron while they are hot, and carefully slice them in half horizontally. Drizzle caramel sauce inside and press the two halves back together.
  4. Let them cool slightly, and then enjoy your homemade Stroopwafels!

Notes

For best results, do not overcook the waffles; they should be golden brown but slightly soft for easy filling. Consider adding a pinch of sea salt to the caramel for added flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
