Preparation
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a larger bowl, mix together the flour, brown sugar, melted butter, honey, cinnamon, and salt. Pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Flour your surface and knead the dough for a few minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for about 20 minutes in a warm spot.
Waffle Making
- Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Once the dough has risen, divide it into small balls (about the size of a golf ball). Flatten each ball slightly, then place it into the waffle iron. Cook until golden brown, usually about 3-5 minutes.
- Remove the waffles from the iron while they are hot, and carefully slice them in half horizontally. Drizzle caramel sauce inside and press the two halves back together.
- Let them cool slightly, and then enjoy your homemade Stroopwafels!
Notes
For best results, do not overcook the waffles; they should be golden brown but slightly soft for easy filling. Consider adding a pinch of sea salt to the caramel for added flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
