Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
Toppings
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1 cup chocolate frosting

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and mix on medium speed until well combined, about 2 minutes.
  4. Carefully stir in the boiling water—the batter will be thin.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  2. Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
Assembly
  1. Slice the strawberries and set them aside.
  2. Once the cakes are cool, place one layer on a serving plate, spread a thick layer of chocolate frosting on top, and layer with sliced strawberries. Top with the second cake and repeat the frosting and strawberries.
Serving
  1. Slice the cake and serve it to your friends and family.

Notes

This recipe is beginner-friendly and can be customized with different types of sugar or frosting. Ensure the cakes are completely cool before frosting to avoid melting.
