Ingredients

For the filling
  • 1 lb ground beef or lamb Use Halal-certified beef or lamb.
  • 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce Use an alcohol-free alternative if needed.
For the topping
  • 2 cups mashed potatoes

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onions and minced garlic, and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the ground beef or lamb to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon.
  4. Stir in the frozen mixed vegetables and cook for another 3 minutes.
  5. Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes, allowing the mixture to thicken slightly. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Spoon the meat mixture into individual ramekins or a muffin tin.
  7. Generously layer the mashed potatoes on top of the filling, creating a beautiful, rustic look. Use a fork to create texture on the surface.
  8. Place the pies in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden and crispy.
  9. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For vegetarian or vegan options, substitute lentils or mushrooms for meat and use plant-based mashed potatoes. Keep an eye on the pies while baking to achieve a perfect golden brown top.
