Preparation of Onions
  1. Start by peeling the onions and slicing them into thick rings, about a quarter-inch wide.
Soaking the Onions
  1. Place the onion rings in a bowl and pour in the buttermilk, allowing them to soak for at least 15 minutes.
Coating the Rings
  1. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. After the soaking time, remove the onion rings from the buttermilk and lightly coat each ring in the flour mixture.
Optional Breadcrumb Coating
  1. For an extra crunch, dip the coated onion rings in breadcrumbs until they are fully covered.
Frying
  1. Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches around 350°F (175°C).
  2. Carefully place the onion rings in the hot oil, frying them in batches for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown.
Draining
  1. Remove the fried onion rings and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
