Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • a pinch salt
For the Fillings and Toppings
  • desired fillings (chocolate chips, fruit preserves, etc.)
  • toppings (powdered sugar or sprinkles)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually incorporate the dry mix into the wet ingredients until just combined.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle, about 1/4-inch thick.
  6. Spread your desired fillings evenly over the rolled-out dough, leaving about a 1/2-inch border.
  7. Carefully roll the dough away from you, starting from the long edge to form a log.
  8. Using a sharp knife, slice the log into even pieces (about 1-inch thick), and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  2. Allow them to cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack.
  3. Dust with powdered sugar or add sprinkles before serving.

Notes

Chill the dough for 15-30 minutes if it feels too soft. Experiment with different fillings to create unique flavor profiles. Use a light-colored baking sheet to prevent over-browning. Keep an eye on the bake time to avoid overcooking.
