Ingredients

For the Hot Chocolate
  • 2 cups whole milk (or your favorite dairy-free alternative)
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips Use high-quality chocolate for richer flavor.
  • 1/4 cup mezcal Can substitute with tequila if mezcal is not available.
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1-2 tablespoons sugar Adjust to taste.
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch salt
Optional Toppings
  • whipped cream
  • chocolate shavings
  • cinnamon
  • marshmallows

Method

Preparation
  1. In a medium saucepan, pour the milk and heat it over medium heat. Stir occasionally until it’s steaming but not boiling.
  2. Once the milk is warm, lower the heat and add the semi-sweet chocolate chips and cocoa powder. Stir until the chocolate is completely melted and well incorporated.
  3. Sprinkle in the sugar and pinch of salt. Stir well until all ingredients are combined, taste-testing as you go to adjust sweetness if needed.
  4. Remove the saucepan from heat and add the vanilla extract and mezcal. Stir until mixed.
  5. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and top with your choice of whipped cream, chocolate shavings, cinnamon, or marshmallows for an extra festive touch.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider using high-quality chocolate or adding a splash of espresso. Pre-mix dry ingredients to save time. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
