Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk mixed with vinegar) as a substitute
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Frying
  • Oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix; some lumps are okay!
  4. Heat oil in a deep fryer or a heavy saucepan to about 350°F (175°C). Once the oil is hot, reduce the heat slightly to maintain the temperature.
Cooking
  1. Using a small spoon or cookie scoop, carefully drop rounded tablespoons of batter into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, turning occasionally for even cooking, about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Once cooked, remove the donut holes with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  3. Once slightly cooled, dust the donut holes with powdered sugar for an extra treat!
