Preparation
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix; some lumps are okay!
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or a heavy saucepan to about 350°F (175°C). Once the oil is hot, reduce the heat slightly to maintain the temperature.
Cooking
- Using a small spoon or cookie scoop, carefully drop rounded tablespoons of batter into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, turning occasionally for even cooking, about 2-3 minutes.
- Once cooked, remove the donut holes with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Once slightly cooled, dust the donut holes with powdered sugar for an extra treat!
Notes
Serve these delightful Chocolate Donut Holes with a warm cup of coffee or milkshake. They can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerated/frozen for longer freshness.
