Preparation
- Gather the Ingredients: Measure all your ingredients. Having everything ready makes the cooking process smoother.
- Mix the Sauce Base: In a medium bowl, combine the soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, and cornstarch. Stir until the mixture is well-blended and there are no lumps.
- Prepare the Aromatics: Mince the garlic and ginger finely to release their full flavor.
- Heat the Pan: In a medium saucepan, heat the sesame oil over medium heat until it shimmers.
- Sauté the Aromatics: Add the minced garlic and ginger to the pan, sautéing for about 1-2 minutes until they become fragrant. Be careful not to burn them!
- Combine and Thicken: Pour the sauce mixture into the pan with the garlic and ginger. Stir continuously and bring it to a gentle simmer. The sauce will begin to thicken in about 3-5 minutes.
- Adjust Consistency: If the sauce is too thick, add water gradually, stirring until you reach your desired consistency.
- Add Heat (Optional): For some heat, stir in the chili paste at this stage.
- Serve or Store: Once thickened, remove from heat. Use immediately over your favorite dishes or allow to cool before storing.
Notes
Leftover Chinese Garlic Sauce can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to one week. For longer storage, consider freezing it in ice cube trays. Gently warm it on the stovetop or microwave for reheating.
