Ingredients

For the Sauce
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 4 tablespoons water
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch for thickening
  • 4 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon sugar brown or white
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon red chili flakes optional for heat
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil for sautéing

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by mincing garlic and gather all components to make the cooking process smoother.
Mixing the Sauce
  1. In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, water, cornstarch, sugar, rice vinegar, and chili flakes (if using). Whisk until the cornstarch is fully dissolved.
Cooking the Sauce
  1. In a medium saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant (but not browned!).
  2. Pour in the sauce mixture and bring to a gentle boil. Stir continuously until the sauce thickens, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Once thickened, remove from the heat and let it cool slightly before using.

Notes

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Freeze in ice cube trays for longer storage and reheat in a saucepan over low heat.
