Method
Preparation
- In a medium saucepan, combine the diced apples, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, and brown sugar. Cook over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes until the apples become tender but still hold their shape. Remove from heat and let cool.
Whipping the Cream
- If using whipped cream, whip it to soft peaks in a mixing bowl. Mix in about a quarter of the caramel sauce to give it a sweet flavor, and set aside.
Layering
- In serving glasses or bowls, start with a layer of crumbled cake at the bottom, followed by a layer of the spiced apples, and then a layer of the whipped cream. Repeat the layering process until the glasses are filled, finishing with a generous swirl of whipped cream on top.
Finishing Touches
- Drizzle with caramel sauce and sprinkle crushed toffee bits or chopped nuts for an extra crunch.
Chill
- Place the trifles in the fridge for about 30 minutes to set and chill. Serve cold and enjoy.
Notes
These trifles are ideal for making ahead of time! Prepare them a few hours early or even the night before for optimal flavor. Store any uneaten trifles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
