Ingredients

For the Spiced Apples
  • 2 cups peeled and diced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) Choose firm apples that hold up well when cooked.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup brown sugar
For the Trifle Assembly
  • 2 cups whipped cream (or whipped topping) For a firmer whipped cream, consider adding a bit of powdered sugar.
  • 1 cup caramel sauce Mix a quarter into the whipped cream for flavor.
  • 2 cups crumbled vanilla cake or pound cake Can be store-bought or homemade.
  • to taste crushed toffee bits or chopped nuts Optional toppings for added crunch.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the diced apples, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, and brown sugar. Cook over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes until the apples become tender but still hold their shape. Remove from heat and let cool.
Whipping the Cream
  1. If using whipped cream, whip it to soft peaks in a mixing bowl. Mix in about a quarter of the caramel sauce to give it a sweet flavor, and set aside.
Layering
  1. In serving glasses or bowls, start with a layer of crumbled cake at the bottom, followed by a layer of the spiced apples, and then a layer of the whipped cream. Repeat the layering process until the glasses are filled, finishing with a generous swirl of whipped cream on top.
Finishing Touches
  1. Drizzle with caramel sauce and sprinkle crushed toffee bits or chopped nuts for an extra crunch.
Chill
  1. Place the trifles in the fridge for about 30 minutes to set and chill. Serve cold and enjoy.
