Ingredients
Method
Preparation
- Start by rinsing the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
- Combine the rice and water in a pot and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Once boiling, cover and reduce heat to low, simmer for about 18-20 minutes or until the water is absorbed.
Seasoning the Rice
- In a small saucepan, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat over low until the sugar dissolves.
- Fold the vinegar mixture gently into the cooked rice after it has cooled a bit.
Preparing the Toppings
- Slice your avocado and cucumber. Shred your imitation crab meat to prepare.
Assembling the Bowls
- In each bowl, start with a generous scoop of seasoned sushi rice.
- Layer on the sliced avocado, cucumber, and imitation crab meat.
- Sprinkle sesame seeds over the top for added crunch.
Serving
- Present your California sushi bowls with soy sauce, and include wasabi and pickled ginger on the side for extra flavor.
Notes
If imitation crab isn’t available, consider using cooked shrimp or a plant-based alternative. For a vegan option, skip the imitation crab and add extra veggies like bell peppers or edamame for protein. Store leftovers in airtight containers for up to 2 days.
