Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 6 cups cubed bread (preferably stale or day-old bread)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup raisins or chocolate chips (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the cubed bread with the milk and heavy cream. Allow it to sit for about 10 minutes.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the soaked bread and gently fold until all the bread is coated. Fold in raisins or chocolate chips if using.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
Baking
  1. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes, until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
  2. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve with warm caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream, fresh berries, or whipped cream. For brunch, pair with crispy bacon and fresh fruit. Stale bread works best for avoiding mushy texture.
