  • 1 large onion Choose a firm variety like Vidalia or sweet onions.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free flour.
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk Or a Halal alternative. Can be made by mixing milk with lemon juice.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Peel the outer skin off the onion and trim the top, leaving the bottom intact.
  2. Slice the onion into 8-12 sections, careful not to cut through the bottom.
Batter Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. In another bowl, pour in the buttermilk.
Coating the Onion
  1. Dip the onion in buttermilk, ensuring each section is well-coated.
  2. Dredge the coated onion in the flour mixture.
Frying
  1. Heat the oil in a deep pot or fryer to about 375°F (190°C).
  2. Place the onion carefully into the oil and fry for about 10 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Serving
  1. Remove the onion from the oil and let it drain on paper towels.
  2. Serve immediately with your choice of dipping sauce.

Notes

For perfect results, use a firm large onion. Customize your dipping sauces for added flavor. If using leftovers, store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
