Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Slice your loaf of bread into thick pieces—about 1-1.5 inches.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the pumpkin puree, eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, pumpkin pie spice, and salt until everything is well combined.
- Use butter to generously grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Arrange the bread slices in the greased dish, overlapping them if necessary. Pour the pumpkin custard mixture evenly over the bread, making sure each piece is soaked.
- Allow the bread to soak in the mixture for at least 15 minutes, preferably 30 minutes.
Baking
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. Top with your favorite toppings like maple syrup or whipped cream.
Notes
For best results, use slightly stale bread for better absorption of the custard. You can make it the night before and store it covered in the fridge. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze individual slices for up to 2 months.
