Baked Italian Sub Sandwiches: A Cheesy Delight

Baked Italian Sub Sandwiches are not just a meal; they’re an experience! Whether it’s for a quick lunch, an effortless weeknight dinner, or a game day treat, these sandwiches pack a punch of flavor and satisfaction. Fun fact: the Italian sub sandwich originated in New York, and it was once just a humble sandwich enjoyed by Italian immigrants. But today, it has evolved into a beloved comfort food all around the world.

Ingredients

  • 4 sub rolls or hoagie buns
  • 1/4 lb salami
  • 1/4 lb ham if desired
  • 1/4 lb pepperoni or capicola
  • 1/4 lb roast beef for added heartiness, optional
  • 8 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup banana peppers or pepperoncini sliced
  • 1/4 cup red onion thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup Italian dressing
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Get that heat going!
  • Assemble the Subs: Carefully slice the sub rolls open—but not all the way through—leaving a hinge on one side. Brush the insides lightly with Italian dressing. Layer the meats, cheese, onions, and banana peppers inside each roll.
  • Top & Bake: Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet lined with foil or parchment paper. In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder. Brush this mixture generously over the top of the rolls.
  • Bake for 12–15 minutes or until the cheese has melted and the tops of the rolls are golden brown.
  • Serve Hot: Slice the sandwiches if desired and serve with olives, chips, or a refreshing side salad!
