Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Cream cheese frosting for topping

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two round cake pans to ensure a lovely release once they're baked.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. This blend of spices is what makes this cake so special!
  • Mix Wet Ingredients: In another large bowl, combine the applesauce, granulated sugar, buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix well until everything is smooth and perfectly blended.
  • Combine: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Stir gently until everything is just combined. Be careful not to overmix; we want a fluffy cake!
  • Pour and Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans, smoothing out the tops. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool: Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. After that, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Frost: Once the cakes are cool, top each layer generously with cream cheese frosting. Stack them for a beautiful presentation!
