Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 packet instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 large egg
For the Filling
  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup apples, peeled and diced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
For the Crumble Topping
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1/4 cup cold butter, cubed
For the Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar for glazing
  • 2 tablespoons milk for glazing

Method

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, combine the warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Then, mix both wet and dry ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
Prepare the Filling
  1. In a separate bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar. Mix until creamy and smooth.
  2. In another bowl, mix the diced apples with cinnamon and brown sugar.
Assemble the Buns
  1. Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  2. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the rolled dough, and then layer the spiced apples on top.
  3. Roll the dough tightly from the long side, and slice it into 12 equal pieces.
Prepare the Crumble Topping
  1. In a bowl, combine the oats, brown sugar, and cubed cold butter. Mix until crumbly.
  2. Sprinkle the crumble over the tops of the sliced buns.
Bake
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the buns in a greased baking dish and allow them to rise for another 30 minutes.
  2. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
Glaze
  1. Meanwhile, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk for the glaze.
  2. Drizzle over the warm buns after they come out of the oven.

Notes

Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor. Don't rush the rising time for fluffy buns. Feel free to swap out the apples for pears or mix in dried fruits for variations. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days or refrigerate for a week.
