Classic Tiramisu Recipe

Tiramisu is an iconic Italian dessert that layers delicate ladyfingers soaked in coffee, rich mascarpone cream, and a dusting of cocoa powder for a dessert that’s both elegant and indulgent. Perfect for special occasions or whenever you’re craving a taste of Italy.

Kitchen Equipment Needed:

  • Mixing bowls
  • Hand or stand mixer with whisk attachment
  • 9×13-inch baking dish or trifle dish
  • Fine mesh sieve
  • Spatula

Ingredients:

For the filling:

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 16 oz mascarpone cheese, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream, cold

For assembly:

  • 2 cups strong brewed coffee, cooled
  • 1/4 cup coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 2 (7 oz) packages ladyfingers (savoiardi)
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting

Directions:

1. Make the mascarpone filling:

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until pale and creamy, about 2–3 minutes.
  • Add the mascarpone cheese and mix until smooth.
  • In a separate chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream to stiff peaks.
  • Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture in batches, being careful not to deflate the cream.

2. Prepare the coffee soak:

In a shallow dish, combine the brewed coffee and coffee liqueur (if using).

3. Assemble the tiramisu:

  • Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture, ensuring they’re saturated but not soggy. Arrange them in a single layer in the bottom of your baking dish.
  • Spread half of the mascarpone filling evenly over the ladyfingers.
  • Add another layer of soaked ladyfingers and spread the remaining mascarpone filling on top.

4. Chill:

Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.

5. Serve:

Before serving, use a fine mesh sieve to dust the top generously with cocoa powder. Slice and serve chilled.

Expert Tips:

  • High-quality coffee: Use freshly brewed espresso or strong coffee for the best flavor.
  • Mascarpone substitute: If mascarpone isn’t available, blend cream cheese with a splash of heavy cream until smooth.
  • Cocoa dusting: Wait until just before serving to dust the cocoa powder for the freshest appearance.

FAQs:

Can I use alcohol-free coffee?
Yes, simply omit the coffee liqueur and use plain coffee.

What if I can’t find ladyfingers?
You can substitute sponge cake or biscotti in a pinch.

Is it safe to eat raw eggs?
Use pasteurized eggs to reduce the risk of consuming raw egg yolks.

Storing & Reheating:

Storing: Store tiramisu covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Freezing: Freeze tightly wrapped for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before serving.

Substitutions & Variations:

  • Chocolate twist: Add a layer of grated dark chocolate between the mascarpone layers.
  • Fruit version: Add a layer of fresh berries for a fruity twist.
  • Gluten-free option: Use gluten-free ladyfingers or sponge cake.
